Following red alert sounded by the Indian Meteorological Department, Uttara Kannada district administration declared a holiday for anganawadis, schools and PU colleges in ten taluks of the district on Thursday (August 28, 2025).

The holiday is applicable to Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Sirsi, Siddapur, Yellapur, Joida and Dandeli taluks. The Deputy Commissioner has also warned people against going near water bodies and the sea in coastal taluks.

Measnwhile 13,192 cusecs of water is being released from Gerusoppa Dam in Honnavar taluk.

Orange alert in Udupi, DK

Udupi Deputy Commissioner T.K. Swaroopa declared holiday for all schools, pre university colleges and ITIs in Udupi district on August 28 in view of India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing orange alert for coastal Karnataka till 8.30 a.m. on August 29.

In Dakshina Kannada, respective tahsildars declared holiday for all schools and pre-university colleges in Mangaluru, Sullia, Bantwal and Ullal taluks. Holiday was also declared for all schools in Mulky, Moodbidri and Puttur taluks.

Some parts of both the districts experienced heavy rainfall on August 28.

Heavy rains predicted in Malnad region

The taluk administration of Hosanagara and Sagar taluks in Shivamogga declared a holiday for schools and colleges in view of heavy rains in both the taluks.

The holiday applies to anganwadi centres, primary schools, high schools and pre-university colleges. The school administration has been asked to compensate for the loss of classes by conducting special classes on holidays.

Following heavy rains, the inflow to Linganmakki Dam in Sagar taluk has increased. As of August 28 morning, the inflow was 47,232 cusecs. The crest gates have been opened to release excess water. The outflow this morning was 32,138. The heavy rains and the increased outflow from the dam have added vigour to Jog Falls.

The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of moderate to heavy rains in parts of the Malnad region on Thursday.

Schools, colleges closed in Yadgir

Harshal Bhoyar, the Deputy Commissioner of Yadgir, also declared a holiday for schools and PU colleges in the district owing to copious rainfall that lashed from late night to early morning on August 28. The DC’s order came considering the safety of the children.

Village sources said that the rain caused extensive damage to the crops, and most of the bridges that were constructed across the small tributaries of the Krishna and Bhima rivers are facing the threat of submergence, as the outflow is likely to be increased.

Around 25 houses were surrounded by water in Yargol village after Doddakere overflowed.
