Due to its large Shia Muslim population and deep-rooted cultural ties to Iran, Alipur village in Chikkaballapur district has initiated a three-day bandh in mourning

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s death has much resonance in Karnataka’s Alipur – a village, dubbed “Mini Iran", in Chikkaballapur district that he visited during his tour to India in 1981.
The village shut down in mourning after Khamenei’s death in strikes led by Israel and the United States on Saturday (February 28).
Historically known as ‘Mini Iran’ due to its large Shia Muslim population and deep-rooted cultural ties to the Islamic Republic, the village has initiated an unannounced and voluntary three-day bandh. Shops, commercial establishments, and local institutions will be closed as residents gather in the streets to express their grief and anger over the killing of Khamenei, a figure revered as a paramount spiritual guide.
Alipur’s personal connection to him makes the response all the more intense. He had visited India in February 1981 when he met then prime minister Indira Gandhi.
Khamenei had also visited Alipur, which remains a cornerstone of its identity. He spent time interacting with local scholars and residents, fostering a bond that has spanned decades.
This visit cemented Alipur’s status as a significant spiritual hub for the Shia community in South India and, for many families, he was not merely a foreign statesman but a personal mentor. The current mourning period is a duty to honour that legacy, with black flags now draped across houses and mosques throughout the village.
“He was not just a Shia leader, his message was for all communities. America and Israel have carried out this attack and some Arab countries have also backed it. It’s a loss to the world. Hence we closed all establishments in Alipur for three days," said a demonstrator.
SECURITY HEIGHTENED AT ALIPUR
The atmosphere in Alipur is highly charged as residents hold portraits of Khamenei and march through streets in a sombre procession.
Public displays of mourning have been accompanied by a strong condemnation of the military actions by Israel and the US. The sudden and total shutdown of Alipur has necessitated a significant security presence, with Chikkaballapur district police deploying additional personnel to monitor the situation and prevent any potential unrest during the large-scale gatherings.
Local community leaders said the shutdown will continue until the mourning rites are complete, ensuring that the memory of the Supreme Leader’s visit and his influence on the village are marked with the highest level of solemnity.
