NEW DELHI: A special court in Bengaluru on Saturday sentenced ex-Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, to life imprisonment. On Friday, Revanna was convicted for raping a 47-year-old domestic worker. Revanna was found guilty of rape, sexual harassment, voyeurism, destruction of evidence and offences under the Information Technology Act.
The verdict was pronounced by judge Santosh Gajanana Bhat nearly 14 months after Revanna’s arrest and within eight weeks of the trial’s commencement. He was in court on Friday when the verdict was announced and appeared emotional as he was taken back into custody. 'Flew to Germany in 2024'Revanna had left for Germany in 2024 shortly after hundreds of pen drives allegedly containing explicit videos were circulated in his constituency. He returned to India after the elections and was arrested at Bengaluru airport on 31 May. The woman at the centre of the present case had filed a police complaint after being rescued from a farmhouse near Mysuru in April. She alleged that she was kidnapped at the behest of Revanna’s family to stop her from pursuing charges. A 40-member special investigation team submitted a five-volume report running into 1,800 pages. According to the prosecution, 26 witnesses were cross-examined and 180 documents examined over 38 hearings. Revanna, a three-time MP, still faces trial in three other cases arising from the same investigation.
