The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued a fresh summons to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay for further questioning on March 15 in the Karur stampede case.

The TVK chief had earlier appeared before the agency at its Delhi headquarters on January 12 and 19. Then, the CBI had asked him to join the probe again on March 10, but he had sought a 15-day extension.

Agency sources said Karur MLA V. Senthilbalaji is expected to get his statement recorded on March 17. The CBI had earlier issued summons to him for appearance on March 9. However, the notice was not received by anyone at his office or residence. The summons was then sent to his official email address.

The CBI had re-registered the case on October 13, 2025, following an order of the Supreme Court. Stating that the incident had “shaken the national conscience”, the court had directed it to investigate the stampede that claimed 41 lives during a rally organised by the TVK.

The court observed that entrusting the investigation to the same police force whose senior officials had publicly exonerated their subordinates would compromise the credibility of the investigation. It also constituted a three-member monitoring committee, chaired by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi, to monitor the progress of the CBI probe.
