The election of former Minister Koppula Eashwar as the honorary president of the Telangana Boggu Gani Karmika Sangham (TBGKS), replacing Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha, when she is in the USA on a personal visit, once again exposed the chinks within the BRS.
Mr. Eashwar was elected at the Telangana Bhavan (BRS office), apparently with the blessings of the party chief K. Chandrashekar Rao and working president K.T. Rama Rao on Wednesday (August 20, 2025).
The TBGKS, a strong force among the Singareni Collieries employees, played a key role in the Telangana agitation and these developments come at a time when the BRS was facing turbulence, with leaders joining other parties and internal dissent.
Responding to her ‘ouster’ and election of Mr. Eashwar, Ms. Kavitha wrote an emotional letter to the Singareni coal mine workers questioning the validity of the election held at the BRS office against the TBGKS rules and violation of labour laws while congratulating Mr. Eashwar on the election.
In her message, she thanked the workers for the opportunity to serve them but saw political conspiracies behind her removal from the post. She alleged that certain vested interests were trying to weaken the unity of Singareni workers with this move. Ms. Kavitha alleged that while she was fighting with the Congress government for workers’ welfare, some conspirators targeted her with personal vendetta.
The BRS MLC also referred to internal party differences, recalling how her earlier letters to her father and the party chief KCR were leaked to the public to malign her image. “Those who leaked my letter to my father conspired against me and are now harassing me,” she claimed.
Ms. Kavitha recalled that she was unanimously elected as the honorary president of TBGKS at a General Body meeting in Kothagudem on August 17, 2015, in the presence of over 1,000 members and key union leaders. During her tenure, she worked like “a sister to every worker’s family,” and played a key role in securing welfare measures, including reinstating dependent jobs, free electricity in workers’ quarters, and fee reimbursement for Singareni employees’ children who secured seats in IITs and IIMs.
The ‘rebel’ leader said she persuaded then-Chief Minister KCR to restore compassionate appointments in Singareni, paving the way for 19,463 youths to secure jobs. She also referred to various other welfare schemes for coal workers and took credit for them.
Ms. Kavitha, however, reassured the workers that her bond with them would remain strong and promised to stand by them in all their difficulties.
