As lakhs of devotees travel to Kedarnath during the Char Dham Yatra, cybercriminals are taking advantage of the rush for helicopter tickets by creating fake booking websites that look almost identical to official portals. Many pilgrims only realise they have been cheated after reaching the helipad and finding that their tickets are fake.

According to Rudraprayag Police, dozens of complaints related to helicopter booking fraud have been received this year, prompting authorities to crack down on fake websites, social media pages and mobile numbers being used to target devotees.

How The Scam Works

The fraud usually begins with a simple online search for Kedarnath helicopter tickets. Pilgrims searching on Google may come across websites that appear genuine, featuring Char Dham packages, helicopter fare charts and branding similar to official booking platforms. In some cases, these websites even appear at the top of search results through paid advertisements.

After selecting a package, users are often asked to contact a number listed on the website. The conversation then shifts to WhatsApp, where fraudsters share fare details, package information and payment links.

Once the payment is made, victims receive what look like genuine e-tickets on WhatsApp or email. Believing their booking is confirmed, they travel to the helipad, only to discover that the tickets were never issued through the authorised booking system.

Police say the fake websites are designed to closely mimic official portals, making it difficult for many users to spot the difference.

What Police Have Found

Investigations have uncovered a larger cyber fraud network operating across multiple states.

According to police, the accused allegedly created fake booking websites, promoted them through online advertisements and handled bookings through WhatsApp conversations. Victims were convinced to transfer money after receiving fake confirmations and ticket documents.

Authorities have already shut down dozens of fraudulent websites and social media accounts linked to the scam and frozen bank accounts used to collect payments.

Police say devotees should follow a few simple precautions before making any booking:

• Book tickets only through the official IRCTC Heli Yatra portal.
• Do not rely on websites that appear through advertisements or unknown search results.
• Carefully check the website address before entering personal details or making payments.
• Be cautious if a website asks you to continue the booking process on WhatsApp.
• Avoid making payments through links sent by individuals claiming to be customer support agents.
• Verify all booking details through official channels before transferring money.

Warning Signs Of A Fake Booking

Pilgrims should be alert if:

• A website offers guaranteed tickets during periods of high demand.
• Customer support asks them to move the conversation to WhatsApp.
• Payment is requested through a personal account or a link shared over chat.
• The website address looks slightly different from the official portal.
• Discounts or offers appear unusually attractive.

What To Do If You Have Been Cheated

Anyone who suspects they have fallen victim to a booking scam should immediately report the fraud through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or call the cybercrime helpline on 1930. Police say reporting the incident quickly increases the chances of freezing fraudulent transactions and recovering the money.
