Newly-elected members and councillors of the local bodies in Kerala are expected to take the oath on December 21, 2025.

With the 2025 local body elections winding down to a close, the State Election Commission (SEC) has issued detailed instructions regarding the assumption of office by the new administrative councils in the local bodies.

The oath-taking date applies to all members/councillors of the local bodies where the five-year-term ends on December 20. The SEC has scheduled the counting of votes polled in the two-phased local body polls on Tuesday and Thursday (December 9 and 11, 2025) for Saturday (December 13, 2025). The results are expected to be announced the same day.

The SEC-nominated returning officers will oversee the elections of presidents and vice-presidents in the grama, block and district panchayats and the municipalities. In the six Corporations, the District Collectors will oversee the elections of the Mayors and Deputy Mayors.

Based on communications from the SEC, the Local Self-Governments department has issued a detailed circular outlining the measures that are to be in place for these steps.

The instructions have been issued in line with the steps outlined in the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act and the Kerala Municipalities Act with respect to the measures that are to be taken once polling and counting of votes are over.
