The Kerala government has sought urgent intervention from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Union government in connection with the widespread complaints over the evaluation of CBSE Class XII examination papers under the newly introduced On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.
General Education Minister N. Samsudheen told mediapersons on Sunday (May 24, 2026) that the State had taken serious note of the concerns raised by students and parents across Kerala, particularly regarding unexpectedly low marks, lack of clarity in scanned answer sheets and delays in the revaluation process.
He also pointed out that the State government would formally request the CBSE and the Centre to extend the application deadline for revaluation and examine the allegations concerning errors in valuation. He added that students should not suffer due to procedural lapses in the evaluation system.
The controversy concerns the OSM system in which answer sheets are scanned and digitally evaluated instead of being physically corrected by teachers.
Several students and parents have alleged that the system was implemented without adequate preparation or training for evaluators and candidates. Many people also claim that the marks awarded were far below expectations, with some reporting that the scanned answer scripts appeared blurred or unclear during evaluation.
Moreover, the delay in providing copies of answer sheets and processing revaluation requests is also feared to affect students who apply for admissions in engineering and other professional courses.
Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas accused the Central government of failing to address the repeated controversies surrounding centrally-conducted examinations. He alleged that recurring irregularities were putting the future of lakhs of students at risk and urged the Centre to respond constructively to the grievances raised by students and parents.
Mr. Brittas also demanded Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation for repeated crises in the sector.
