A district consumer commission in Kerala has directed the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation to pay Rs 30,000 as compensation for failing to provide proper service to an ailing passenger.
The order came after a complaint by Mohammed Zainudheen Kormath, a resident of Thottassheriyara. He had boarded a KSRTC bus from Amballur in Thrissur district, travelling to Kolappuram in Malappuram. After boarding, he found that no seats were available on the bus.
The commission noted that the passenger was also not dropped at his intended stop, Kakkad. Instead, the bus continued along the national highway without taking the service road, forcing him to get down at Kooriyad. This caused further inconvenience to him, according
Observing the case, the commission said that the failure to inform the passenger about reserved seating and not allowing him to alight at the designated stop amounted to a clear deficiency in service.
The Malappuram District Consumer Commission, headed by president K Mohandas, along with members Preethi Sivaraman and CV Muhammed Ismail, ruled in favour of the complainant.
The panel directed KSRTC to pay Rs 25,000 as compensation and Rs 5,000 towards litigation costs within 45 days. It added that a delay in payment would attract an interest of nine per cent.
