An 18-month-old baby boy died on Friday night after remaining in critical condition for five days. His family has alleged that the child’s condition deteriorated after he was administered anaesthesia for a minor procedure to treat a cut on his lip.

The toddler, Devansh Shouria, died at Baby Memorial Hospital in Kannur on Friday night. He was the son of T. Suraj and Vijisha of Mathamangalam.

According to the family, Devansh suffered a lip injury after falling while playing at home on July 5. He was taken to Baby Memorial Hospital in Payyannur, where doctors planned to stitch the wound under anaesthesia.

The family alleged that his health worsened immediately after the anaesthesia was administered and that he never regained consciousness. He was later shifted to the hospital’s Kannur unit for specialised treatment, where he died at around 9 pm on Friday.

Payyannur Police have registered a case against the anaesthetist, Dr Anjali, under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with acts endangering human life or personal safety.

Baby Memorial Hospital, in a statement, said that all medical procedures were carried out as per protocol. It added that the child was provided with every possible treatment under the supervision of senior specialists from various departments of the hospital. The hospital also said it is fully cooperating with the authorities in the investigation.
