Ketan Agarwal Murder Case: Siya Goyal, Chetan Chaudhary to Be Produced in Court Today.
Lohagad Fort murder: The investigation into the alleged murder of 26-year-old Ketan Agarwal has reached a crucial stage, with Pune Rural Police set to produce accused Siya Goyal and Chetan Chaudhary before the Wadgaon Mawal Court on Monday as their seven-day police custody comes to an end.
Police are expected to seek an extension of custody, saying several aspects of the investigation are still pending. Just a day earlier, police took both accused to Lohagad Fort to recreate the alleged crime scene and reconstruct the sequence of events. Officials believe more substantial and conclusive evidence is likely to emerge during the ongoing probe.
Forensic evidence key to prosecution
CNN-News18 has exclusively learnt that investigators believe they have established a strong motive and identified opportunities allegedly exploited by the accused. However, police acknowledge that the case currently rests largely on circumstantial and digital evidence, making forensic examination critical to securing a conviction.
According to police sources, statements made during interrogation alone have limited value in court unless they are supported by scientific and material evidence. Investigators said the biggest challenge is matching the statements of both accused with forensic findings.
Police cite motive, digital trail
Investigators believe the alleged crime spot inside Lohagad Fort was deliberately selected because it was isolated, surrounded by thick vegetation and forest cover, and had no surveillance cameras.
Police have appealed to visitors who were at the fort on the day of the incident to come forward with any information. However, no eyewitness has been identified so far, further increasing the importance of forensic evidence.
According to investigators, Siya Goyal’s alleged relationship with co-accused Chetan Chaudhary gradually led to resentment towards her fiancé, Ketan Agarwal.
Police sources claimed Siya allegedly told investigators that Ketan had lied about wearing a hair patch, which she viewed as a sign of incompatibility. When confronted with photographs and videos from the couple’s engagement showing what appeared to be a happy relationship, she allegedly said she came from a family where important decisions were influenced by parental expectations.
Investigators further alleged that Siya did not want to end the engagement because she feared bringing disrespect to her influential family. Chetan allegedly told police he wanted to elope with her, but Siya reportedly rejected the idea, considering it too risky. Police claim she allegedly believed killing Ketan was the only “clean" way to secure a future with Chetan without bringing shame upon their families.
Investigators also believe the relationship between Siya and Chetan involved frequent late-night calls and meetings. Police sources alleged Chetan was frustrated by Siya’s engagement and questioned why she continued with the relationship. According to investigators, his alleged possessiveness, combined with their shared interest in cricket and Siya’s refusal to elope, became factors behind the alleged conspiracy.
Evidence recovery continues
Investigators believe the accused carefully planned the crime but may not have anticipated the extent of digital tracking available to police.
According to ANI, Lonavala Rural Police have seized the two-wheeler allegedly used by Chetan Chaudhary to travel from Pune to Lohagad Fort. Police have also recovered the hoodie and headphones he was allegedly wearing on the day of the incident. Forensic examinations have been carried out on the motorcycle as well as the recovered clothing.
Earlier, Siya Goyal’s parents, Pravin Goyal and Pooja Goyal, were questioned at Lonavala Police Station. On Sunday, police again took both accused to Lohagad Fort to recreate the alleged crime scene before bringing Siya back to the police station as the investigation continued.
Ketan Agarwal died after allegedly being pushed from Lohagad Fort on June 18. Siya Goyal and Chetan Chaudhary were arrested on June 23 and remanded to police custody until June 29.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has approved the setting up of a fast-track court in the case and appointed senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Ujjwal Nikam as the Special Public Prosecutor after Ketan’s father sought speedy justice during a meeting with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
