A deeply distressing case has emerged from Chhapra district in Bihar, raising troubling questions about the treatment of elderly family members. In what is described as one of the city’s most prominent localities, an elderly man who owns property worth crores is now living in a shelter after allegedly being forced out by his own family.
Elderly Man With Property Worth Crores Living In Shelter
The case concerns 60-year-old Umesh Chandra Verma, a resident of Prabhu Nath Nagar in Chhapra. Despite owning a house and land valued at crores of rupees, he is currently living in a Rain Basera (night shelter).
At an age when he should be resting in his own home, Umesh is reportedly moving from place to place, struggling with poor health and limited mobility.
Umesh said that during his younger years, he worked in tea gardens in Assam. According to him, his family kept taking his earnings on the promise of arranging his marriage. However, he spent his youth working and never got married.
He claims that although he owns land and has relatives, his situation changed after he stopped working and returned home.
Allegation Of Being Forced Out
Umesh alleges that once he was no longer earning, his family took control of his share of the land and his savings and forced him out of the house. He said his brothers and even neighbours pressured him to leave. He further claimed that his family never allowed him to get married.
After returning to Chhapra, Umesh worked as a security guard at Chhapra Sadar Hospital. However, due to illness and declining health, he lost his job. Now, at 60, he finds it difficult even to walk.
With no stable income and no access to his property, he has been left dependent on charitable support.
Surviving With Community Support
Currently, Umesh is staying at a shelter in Chhapra. He told Local18 that the Yuva Kranti Roti organisation provides him with dinner every day, while his nephew brings him breakfast in the morning.
Umesh had four brothers, two of whom have passed away. One surviving brother lives in Patna.
Appeal For Help
Through Local18, Umesh has appealed to the authorities to intervene and help him regain control of his house and land. He hopes for administrative support so that he can return to his own property and live with dignity in his remaining years.
