New York didn’t just need a win. It needed a release.

And on Wednesday night, the Knicks delivered one for the ages — orange and blue catharsis, bottled and detonated.

The Knicks hadn’t won in over a week. They’d been booed at home. They’d lost nine of their last 11. Two nights earlier, Dallas ran them out of Madison Square Garden by halftime.

So what did they do next?

They handed the Brooklyn Nets the most brutal beating in franchise history.

Final score: Knicks 120, Nets 66.

That’s not a typo. That’s a 54-point demolition — the largest margin of victory the Knicks have recorded in their 80-year existence.

Jalen Brunson led the charge with 20 points, calmly orchestrating what quickly turned into a full-blown beatdown. By the time the dust settled, this wasn’t a rivalry game. It was a mercy situation.

The previous franchise record for margin of victory was 48 points — done three times, most recently in 1994.

Here’s the even more embarrassing detail. This Knicks team entered the night desperate. They were reeling. They were searching. Brunson had reportedly called a players-only meeting a day earlier to demand answers and accountability.

Message received.

Karl-Anthony Towns, who absorbed plenty of boos on Monday, responded with 14 points. Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges chipped in 11 apiece. Off the bench, Landry Shamet poured in 18 and Miles McBride added 14. Everyone ate.

Brooklyn? Not so much.

The Nets scored just 66 points, their fewest since 2005 — back when they were still in New Jersey. It was also the fewest points the Knicks have allowed since 2012. Only two Brooklyn players reached double figures, and the game was long decided before halftime.

A meaningless three-pointer with 8.5 seconds left spared the Nets from suffering the largest loss in the NBA this season.

New York waited a week for a win. Turns out, they were saving up for something historic.
