Kolkata celebrates Poila Baishakh with culture, colour and community spirit

Kolkata is set to welcome the Bengali New Year with vibrant celebrations across the city, as people stepped out to embrace the spirit of Poila Baishakh with food, fashion, and cultural festivities.

Malls and public spaces turned into lively hubs, blending tradition with contemporary experiences, as families and friends gathered to mark the occasion. Amid this festive fervour, South City Mall hosted Notun-er Shurute, a thoughtfully curated celebration that brought together tradition, culture, and community in a contemporary setting. The mall was transformed into an immersive festive space, with decor inspired by Potochitro, Bengal’s traditional storytelling art form.

Intricate motifs, vibrant hues, and thematic installations created a rich, nostalgic ambience, offering visitors a culturally rooted yet elevated experience.

Adding to the celebrations was a lively cultural showcase by young students, who presented a dynamic performance highlighting New Year traditions from across India, including Bihu and Baisakhi. The showcase brought together diverse cultural elements through music and dance, reflecting the spirit of unity in diversity. With a steady footfall of visitors soaking in the festive vibe, the celebration captured the essence of Noboborsho.
