Amid a statewide uproar over the South Calcutta Law College gang-rape case, CNN-News18 accessed a 2018 letter revealing that the college authorities had previously raised serious concerns about the misconduct of the prime accused, Monojit Mishra.

In the letter dated December 12, 2018, the then principal of the Law College expressed apprehension regarding Monojit Mishra’s behaviour to the Kolkata Police.

Former Principal Debasish Chattopadhyay wrote to the Joint Commissioner of Police about Monojit Mishra’s disruptive conduct at college events and raised concerns over possible disturbances during the annual social programme on December 13 that year.

In the context of the raised concerns, Chattopadhyay officially sought sufficient security measures from the Kolkata Police for the annual event at Ahindra Mancha, Chetla.

Similarly, the college highlighted how Mishra created trouble during past college programmes to seek security for its annual programme on March 24, 2022.

Manojit, a former leader of the Trinamool Congress student wing, was arrested for the alleged rape of a 24-year-old student on a law college campus.

The complainant alleged that Mishra, who had earlier proposed marriage to her—a proposal she declined—raped her in the presence of the other two students.

The alleged gang-rape occurred on June 25 inside a security guard’s room located on the premises of South Calcutta Law College.

Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the incident.

Initially, they took into custody the prime accused, Manojit Mishra, a former student, along with Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee, both current students of the law college. All three were remanded to police custody until July 8.

Later, college security guard Pinaki Bandyopadhyay was also arrested in relation to the case.

During the medico-legal examination, scratch marks were found on Manojit’s body, indicating possible signs of resistance by the survivor.

However, the lawyer representing Manojit Mishra said that the “scratch mark" found on his client’s body during a medical examination was a “love bite".
