NEW DELHI: Union minister Sukanta Majumdar on Saturday strongly criticised the West Bengal government over the recent alleged gangrape incident in Kolkata, drawing parallels with the RG Kar Medical College case.
He called the repeated occurrence of such crimes within educational institutions a “pathetic failure” of the administration. "Both the incidents (recent and RG Kar rape case) happened inside an educational institution. Inability of the state government to stop these is a pathetic failure. Someone should take responsibility, "Majumdar said.Reacting to the government’s defence that police cannot be present everywhere, the minister countered, “Even if police presence is not possible everywhere, at the very least, it must be acknowledged that the government has failed to maintain a safe environment.”
"You say police can't be everywhere. It must be at least accepted that the government is not able to maintain an environment of safety, and with such failures, they have no right to stay in their post, "Majumdar added.Earlier today, West Bengal Police arrested a campus security guard in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student at a college in Kolkata, marking the fourth arrest in the case. The arrest comes two days after the survivor, a resident of South 24 Parganas, filed a complaint alleging that multiple individuals sexually assaulted her inside the college's security guard room on Wednesday evening. She also told police that the incident occurred after she was offered a key position in the student union.Earlier, on Thursday, police had arrested three others in the case — Manojit Mishra, a former student currently working as an ad-hoc staffer at the college, and two current students, Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed.
