Kolkata Police’s New Rulebook: Nameplates, ID Cards, Proper Uniform Mandatory On Duty. Here’s Why

The new instructions come amid concerns that police personnel are often found on duty without properly displaying their nameplates or other identifying insignia.

In a move aimed at strengthening accountability and improving public trust, the Kolkata Police has issued fresh instructions mandating strict adherence to uniform regulations for all personnel.

Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, through Order No. 294 dated June 13, 2026, has directed all police personnel, including those deployed on traffic duty, to wear the prescribed uniform in a neat, clean, and presentable condition while performing official duties. The order has been issued in continuation of an earlier directive dated May 24, 2026.

Why Kolkata Police Wants Officer’s Name Visible On Duty?

The new instructions come amid concerns that police personnel are often found on duty without properly displaying their nameplates or other identifying insignia. Such lapses can create difficulties in establishing accountability, particularly in situations involving complaints from members of the public.

Police sources indicate that another concern behind the directive is the recurring issue of individuals allegedly impersonating police personnel. In several instances, people have reportedly posed as constables or police officials to carry out unlawful activities, making visible identification markers increasingly important. The mandatory display of nameplates, official badges, and identity cards is expected to make it easier for citizens to verify the identity of personnel on duty.

Dress Code

According to the order, all officers and personnel must wear plain black leather shoes – Oxford, Derby, or Ammunition type – as prescribed under the Police Regulations of Calcutta, 1968. Exceptions will be allowed only for specialised units or duties where separate dress codes or footwear have been specifically authorised.

The order further states that every officer must properly display the official nameplate, Kolkata Police insignia, and all authorised badges and accoutrements while on duty. Carrying an official identity card has also been made mandatory.

Senior officers have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the instructions across all units. The order has come into force with immediate effect.

The move is being viewed as an effort to reinforce discipline within the force, improve transparency in public interactions, and prevent misuse of police identity by unauthorised individuals.
