The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested one person in connection with the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker Abhijit Sarkar in Kolkata’s Narkeldanga in an alleged post-poll violence incident in 2021.
According to the details, the arrested accused was identified as Arun Dey. However, three other accused in the case remain at large.
Meanwhile, Arun Dey would be produced before a Kolkata court, as the investigations continue.
The CBI had announced a bounty of Rs 50,000 on the accused.
In May 2023, the police had arrested two persons in the case, and later chargesheeted them.
The 2021 incident happened shortly after the assembly election results were announced on May 2, the same year.
The instant post-poll violence case was registered by the CBI on the allegations that the deceased Abhijit Sarkar was brutally assaulted by the supporters of a political party and succumbed to his injuries.
“It was further alleged that the said accused were part of an unlawful assembly and they attacked the house of Abhijit Sarkar, damaged the properties, looted the gold jewellery, destroyed the CCTV system, removed the DVR of the CCTV system, and also assaulted Abhijit Sarkar," the CBI had stated.
Following a preliminary investigation, a chargesheet was filed against 20 accused in the case.
