Football never runs out of fairytales — and tonight, Kosovo could be writing one of its most remarkable chapters yet.
The youngest nation in international football stands just one win away from qualifying for its first-ever FIFA World Cup.
Standing in their way? A formidable Turkey side in a high-stakes playoff final.
A Young Nation, A Short Football Journey
Kosovo’s football story is as complex as its political history. The country declared independence from Serbia in 2008, though its sovereignty remains disputed, with several major nations yet to recognise it.
For years, Kosovo’s footballers existed on the fringes, restricted to unofficial friendlies as they awaited global recognition. That changed in May 2016, when they were narrowly voted into UEFA, with 28 of 54 member associations backing their inclusion despite strong opposition from Serbia.
Just 10 days later, they were admitted into FIFA in a landmark moment that finally allowed Kosovo to compete on the global stage.
From there, progress has been steady, if not spectacular. But now, they stand on the brink of something truly extraordinary.
The Road To The Brink
Kosovo’s journey to this playoff final has been anything but straightforward. They edged past tough competition in their qualifying group and then pulled off a thrilling 4-3 win over Slovakia in the semi-final.
Now ranked 78th in the world, they’ll host Turkey in Pristina, with a place in this summer’s expanded 48-team World Cup up for grabs.
Firepower and Belief
Leading the charge is a potent attacking duo: Vedat Muriqi and Fisnik Asllani.
Muriqi, in particular, has been in red-hot form, netting 18 goals in La Liga for Mallorca and ranking among Europe’s top scorers alongside names like Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, and Erling Haaland.
For a nation of just 1.6 million people, tonight is about more than just football — it’s about identity, pride, and validation on the world stage.
Ninety minutes now stand between Kosovo and immortality.
