Indian weightlifter Koyel Bar made history by setting two new youth world records and winning both the youth and junior titles in the women’s 53kg event at the Commonwealth Championships on Tuesday.

Competing in the junior and youth categories, the teenager achieved a remarkable total lift of 192kg (85kg+107kg). She equalled the snatch youth world record with an 85kg lift and then surpassed the clean and jerk record of 105kg by lifting 107kg in her second attempt. This feat also broke the previous youth world total record of 188kg.

What Did Koyel Bar Say After Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships?

“I was targetting the world record. I normally lift 107-108kg in clean and jerk during training and the record was within my reach. I could have done 109kg as well, but missed it narrowly," Koyel was quoted as saying to Sportstar.

“I began weightlifting in 2018 after seeing my father, who used to go to the gym. My game improved in the last two years after I trained under Vijay (Sharma) sir. Earlier, my total was 147, now it is 192kg," she added.

Koyel’s performance was three kilograms more than her compatriot Sneha Soren, who won silver in the senior category with a total of 185kg (81kg + 104kg). However, Sneha was outperformed by Nigeria’s Omolola Didih, who set new Commonwealth snatch and total records with 197kg (90kg + 107kg).

Chief national coach Vijay Sharma revealed that he had scoted the teenager, saying :"Koyel looked physically strong to me. So, after spotting her along with a few other kids with a long-term target of grooming lifters for the Olympics, I initially focused on technique leaving aside other aspects. OGQ helped us in providing scientific support to the kids and it proved beneficial."

In the men’s 65kg division, Raja Muthupandi narrowly missed out on the gold after failing two snatch attempts. His total lift of 296kg (128kg+168kg) was just one kilogram short of Malaysia’s Muhamad Aznil Bin Bidin, who lifted a total of 297kg (125kg + 172kg). Papua New Guinea’s Morea Baru took bronze with a total of 292kg (127kg + 165kg).
