K.K. Rajaram, District Medical Officer (DMO), Kozhikode, has issued an alert against Nipah infection in the wake of two cases reported from Malappuram and Palakkad in recent days.
A release said on Monday (July 7, 2025) that though no cases had been reported from the district so far, those with symptoms need to contact health workers. Fruits and vegetables bitten by birds and animals should not be consumed. If anyone comes into contact with the excretion of birds or animals, they need to thoroughly wash their hands with soap. Fallen fruits should not be used. Fruits and vegetables need to be washed properly before consumption.
Also, toddy collected from coconut trees and palm trees in areas populated by bats should be avoided. Food and water should be kept in air-tight containers, and nose and mouth should be covered with a handkerchief while sneezing and coughing, and those involved in patient care should take personal protective measures.
