Members of Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) would launch an indefinite day-and-night agitation in front of the Deputy Commissioners’ office in Kalaburagi from September 1 demanding that the State Government declare Kalaburagi a ‘flood-affected district’ and announce a special package for farmers who suffered losses due to excess rainfall.
Addressing press persons in Kalaburagi on August 29, KPRS district president Sharanabasappa Mamshetty urged the government to conduct a crop loss survey and also to clear the dues of last year’s crop insurance claims to distressed farmers.
Many parts of the district have witnessed extensive damage to standing kharif crops, including red gram, green gram, black gram, soya and cotton, due to water logging caused by heavy and persistent downpour in the district.
The farmers, who have not insured their crops, are expecting the State Government to come to their rescue by extending financial assistance by announcing a special package to save them from the loss.
Mr. Mamshetty demanded that the Central Government implement M.S. Swaminathan Committee’s report on minimum support price (MSP) to protect the farming community.
