Members of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) staged a demonstration in the city on Friday and slammed actor Kamal Haasan for his remarks on Kannada.

The actor’s statement that Kannada stemmed from Tamil has hurt the sentiments of people of Karnataka as it was baseless and false, said the KRV.

“The actor’s remarks is an affront on the rich culture, history, and legacy of Kannada apart from hurting the self-respect of Kannadigas,” it added.

The KRV said that if Kamal Haasan did not withdraw his remarks and offer an apology, protests across Karnataka will be intensified. The activists also called for the boycott of his forthcoming film Thug Life. The KRV leaders said the anger against the actor’s statement was palpable across the State, and it has decided that the film would not be allowed for release in Karnataka under any circumstances.

The KRV also urged the State government and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce to take steps to ensure that the Kamal Haasan’s movie was not released in the State.
