The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is all set to enhance the efficiency of its 225 MLD water treatment plant (WTP) in Aluva by installing high-tension motor pump sets.

The upgrade will result in the generation of an additional 10 MLD of treated water and improve drinking water supply in Kochi and adjoining panchayats, according to KWA officials.

Along with the installation of the high-tension motor pump sets at WTP-3, high-tension cable upgrade and repair of the approach road will also be carried out.

The individual capacities of the WTPs are 48 MLD for WTP-1, 72 MLD for WTP-2, 70 MLD for WTP-3, and 35 MLD for WTP-4.

The State Cabinet had recently approved a tender worth ₹27.36 crore for the “augmentation of water supply system in Kochi city and adjoining areas and urgent measures at the 225 MLD WTP at Aluva.”

At present, the water requirements of the Kochi Corporation and adjoining areas are largely met by four treatment plants at Aluva, with a combined production capacity of 225 MLD. In addition, there is a 100-MLD plant at Maradu. The treated water is carried through three major transmission lines.

“The city is currently facing a water deficit of 60 MLD. The additional 10 MLD generated after the installation of the high-capacity motor pump set will help ease the crisis to some extent. The impact is likely to be felt across the Kochi Corporation and adjoining areas,” sources in the KWA said. It is essential that these works are carried out as they will contribute to the efficiency of the plant, they added.

The work, which will be carried out through government funding, is expected to be finished in four months.
