Before Mbappé, only Argentina's Guillermo Stábile, Hungary's Sándor Kocsis and Lionel Messi had managed to score multiple goals in three consecutive FIFA World Cup matches.

Kylian Mbappé is leading France at the FIFA World Cup 2026 and, on Monday (Tuesday IST), during his side’s second Group I match, he entered the record books by becoming the first Frenchman and only the fourth player in history to score multiple goals in three consecutive FIFA World Cup matches.

The 27-year-old scored a hat-trick for Les Bleus in the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup against Argentina on December 18, 2022, and found the back of the net twice against Senegal in France’s opening Group I match of this year’s World Cup.

In France’s second match of the ongoing tournament, against Iraq at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Mbappé scored twice in the opening 54 minutes of play.

He opened the scoring in the 14th minute and added his second goal in the 54th minute.

Before Mbappé, only Argentina’s Guillermo Stábile, Hungary’s Sándor Kocsis and Lionel Messi had managed to score multiple goals in three consecutive FIFA World Cup matches.

Argentina’s Guillermo Stábile was the first player to score multiple goals in three consecutive FIFA World Cup matches. He achieved the feat in the inaugural edition of the tournament, held in Uruguay in 1930. Stábile scored a hat-trick in Argentina’s Group 1 match against Mexico at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo and then struck braces in each of the next two matches against Chile and the United States at the same venue.

His feat was matched by Hungary striker Sándor Kocsis at the 1954 FIFA World Cup. Kocsis scored a hat-trick in Hungary’s opening group-stage match against South Korea in Zurich and then found the net four times in the second group-stage match against West Germany in Basel.

He followed that up with a brace in the quarter-final against Brazil and another brace in the semi-final against Uruguay in Lausanne.

Kocsis, who finished the 1954 FIFA World Cup with 11 goals, remains the first and only player to score multiple goals in four consecutive FIFA World Cup matches.

Messi also scored two goals for Argentina in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final and has already struck five times in just two matches at this year’s tournament. He netted a hat-trick against Algeria on June 16 before scoring a brace against Austria on June 22.
