Kylian Mbappé entered his name in the history books on Tuesday (June 16) by breaking the record of scoring most goals for France in the FIFA World Cup. The 27-year-old Paris-born footballer, who is leading France in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I match against Senegal at the New York–New Jersey Stadium, opened the scoring in the 66th minute and scored his second goal of the minute in the 96th minute.
The two goals by the French captain against Senegal took his tally to 14 goals in 15 FIFA World Cup matches for Les Bleus.
By scoring his 14th World Cup goal, Mbappé broke Just Fontaine’s record for the most goals scored for France in the tournament. Fontaine played just six matches for Les Bleus in the 1958 FIFA World Cup and scored 13 goals.
Mbappé is now joint-third on the all-time FIFA World Cup goalscorers list. Only Miroslav Klose of Germany and Ronaldo of Brazil have scored more goals than him.
