Lamine Yamal is part of Spain’s FIFA World Cup 2026 squad and, on Thursday (Friday IST), he entered his name in the record books by becoming the youngest European footballer to win 10 matches at major international tournaments.

Yamal, who is playing his first FIFA World Cup tournament for Spain in the ongoing 2026 edition, has won three of the four matches he has played with La Roja at the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far.

Before the World Cup, he had also helped Spain win seven matches during their triumphant UEFA Euro 2024 campaign, taking his tally to 10 victories at major tournaments.

At 18 years and 354 days old, Yamal broke the previous record held by France’s Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe, who has scored 18 goals in 18 FIFA World Cup matches for Les Bleus, was 23 years and 355 days old when he registered his 10th victory at major international tournaments with France.

At this year’s FIFA World Cup, Yamal has scored one goal for Spain, which came against Saudi Arabia in La Roja’s second Group H match. The teenage sensation opened the scoring for the 2010 FIFA World Cup winners in the 10th minute of the contest. He also featured in the starting XI for Spain’s final group-stage match against Uruguay, helping his side secure a place in the knockout stage.

Spain defeated Austria 3-0

Spain coasted past Austria and into the World Cup last-16 on Thursday, thoroughly outclassing their opponents in a 3-0 knockout win with a brace from Mikel Oyarzabal and a Pedro Porro header.

The European champions controlled possession and sliced through the Austrian defense in a typically dominant performance in Los Angeles.

The win — which could have been by a greater margin, with a disallowed goal and a free kick off the woodwork — sets up a tantalizing round-of-16 clash with either Portugal or Croatia.
