Star Spain footballer Lamine Yamal was seen comforting an emotional Cristiano Ronaldo after Portugal went down 0-1 in the Round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, as the latter finished his international career without the coveted title.

With Ronaldo reduced to tears after Portugal’s 0-1 loss to Spain in Dallas, Yamal walked over to console and embrace the Portuguese great in a touching gesture of respect.

The moment came after Mikel Merino struck a stoppage-time winner to send Spain into the quarter-finals and bring Portugal’s FIFA World Cup campaign to an end. Watch the video here:

Tonight was bigger than just a match. For Cristiano Ronaldo, it marked the end of a legendary chapter. For Lamine Yamal, it was another step toward what could be a legendary future. The 41-year-old Portugal skipper and one of the best footballers of all time says that he will now go away and think about what comes next.

Ronaldo has won it all in a trophy-laden career at some of Europe’s biggest clubs and tasted European glory with his nation.

But despite an illustrious career filled with major honours, Ronaldo will retire without a FIFA World Cup winner’s medal. The veteran forward endured a frustrating Round of 16 clash in Texas, struggling to make an impact as Portugal bowed out with a disappointing loss to Spain.

“That is football, that is the life of a footballer. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose and you have to move on. The truth is, the biggest title I won with the national team was in 2016 (Euros), which for me is just as significant as a World Cup, honestly," Ronaldo said after the match.
