Barcelona FC confirm Lamine Yamal has a left hamstring injury and will miss the rest of the season, but he is expected to be fit for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Barcelona FC has confirmed that Lamine Yamal’s club season has ended due to a hamstring injury he suffered after scoring a penalty in the LaLiga win over Celta Vigo on Wednesday. However, in major relief to Spanish football fans, the club said ‘he is expected to be available’ for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Yamal won and converted the spot kick in the 40th minute to give Barça the lead. The teenage sensation didn’t celebrate and instead dropped to the ground, grabbing his hamstring and calling for medical attention. After briefly receiving treatment on the pitch, he walked off, but didn’t continue in the match.

All hell broke loose in the Spanish media soon after, with reports claiming serious concerns about Yamal’s much-anticipated debut in the FIFA World Cup. Rumors spread about him being ruled out for months and not weeks, even as Barcelona waited for his swelling to come down so the medical staff could conduct scans.

“The tests carried out have confirmed that first-team player Lamine Yamal has a hamstring injury in his left leg (biceps femoris muscle). The player will follow a conservative treatment plan. Lamine Yamal will miss the remainder of the season, and he is expected to be available for the World Cup," Barcelona said in a statement.

Yamal is supposed to make his World Cup debut against Cape Verde on June 15. Spain would hope that even if he misses a few initial group-stage games due to injury, Yamal would be able to remain fit for most of the tournament.

Until then, it’s a sizeable blow to the Catalan club even though the 1-0 win over Celta Vigo took them nine points clear of second-placed rivals Real Madrid. A lion’s share of Barcelona’s creativity flows through Yamal, and without him, the right side of the attack would look quite light for the remaining six matches in La Liga, which includes an all-important Clásico at Camp Nou on May 10.
