Tata Motors opens Rs 9,000 crore plant in Tamil Nadu's Ranipet; 5,000 jobs expected

Jaguar Land Rover manufacturing facility at Panapakkam in Ranipet district was inaugurated on Monday

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin on Monday inaugurated the Tata Motors passenger vehicles and Jaguar Land Rover manufacturing facility at the SIPCOT complex in Panapakkam, Ranipet district, marking a major expansion of Tata Motors’ luxury vehicle manufacturing footprint in India. Tamil Nadu industries minister TRB Rajaa said the greenfield plant is expected to generate around 5,000 direct jobs and also spur significant employment through ancillary units that are likely to come up around the facility. He said the overall impact on the region would be “phenomenal”. Built with an investment of Rs 9,000 crore, the facility was completed in record time following swift regulatory clearances and execution.

The Ranipet unit represents the first phase of a larger development plan, with further expansion planned in the coming years. The workforce has been drawn from across Tamil Nadu through state-run skill development initiatives, including the Naan Mudhalvan programme, with a sizeable number of employees recruited from Ranipet district itself. Rajaa credited the speedy execution of the project to close coordination between the state government and the Tata Group, describing Tamil Nadu as a manufacturing powerhouse and the Ranipet facility as a key part of the state’s industrial growth strategy. The plant will manufacture both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles (EVs), reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s growing role in India’s future mobility ecosystem.
