Laser beam hits IndiGo flight approaching Coimbatore airport

COIMBATORE: An IndiGo flight from Bengaluru was hit by a laser beam during its final approach to Coimbatore airport on Friday night. Authorities at the Coimbatore International Airport notified the incident to the city police for necessary action.An official with the Coimbatore International Airport said the laser beam hit the flight around 7.50pm on Friday. "We have informed the police about the approximate location from where the laser beam was directed," he said, "Laser beams, especially those used during events, can temporarily blind or distract pilots, particularly during the landing phase. This poses a serious safety threat to both the aircraft and passengers" the official said."Recently, we requested the police to monitor the laser light usage in parties, marriage halls and festivals in the surroundings of the airport and educate the public not to use laser lights," he said.
