Officials of the Legal Metrology and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) conducted joint raids on hotels, restaurants and bakeries at various places here on Tuesday (August 19).
The officers seized stale food, frozen items and outdated material from some establishments, said the FSSAI authorities. “The Legal Metrology and FSSAI officers formed about 20 teams and are conducting searches in bakeries and hotels at different places in Vijayawada,” said FSSAI Joint Food Controller N. Purchandra Rao.
Speaking to The Hindu, Legal Metrology Joint Controller A. Krishna Chaitanya said that raids were being conducted on sweet stalls and other establishments to check weight, MRP, details of the manufacturer, contact numbers given on the product or not, manufacturing and expiry date and other particulars.
“We are verifying the weighing machines, packaging rules on the items in the shops located at Benz Circle, Patamata, Satyanarayanapuram, M.G. Road and other areas,” said Legal Metrology Deputy Controller Hari Prasad.
The Food Safety officials seized samples of raw material, packaged food items and frozen items from hotels, restaurants and sweet stalls, which would be sent for laboratory for examination, a food inspector, who participated in the raids said.
