With US-Iran talks set to get underway in Switzerland on Sunday, a former American government advisor described Vice President JD Vance’s trip as a “rescue mission" as Tehran pushed for an end to the Israeli offensive in Lebanon.

Vance arrived in Switzerland for the upcoming technical-level talks with Iran aimed at fleshing out key details of the preliminary agreement signed earlier by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, which seeks to halt hostilities between Washington and Tehran after months of escalating tensions.

Before departing, the US Vice President said his top priorities in negotiations with Iran are to set up the structure of the talks, make progress on nuclear negotiations and achieve a ceasefire in Lebanon, which has been hampered by relentless Israeli attacks despite a ceasefire in effect.

“I think the vice president’s trip right now is less about this victory lap and more of a rescue mission of those talks," Negah Angha, a former senior advisor at the US Department of State and National Security Council, told CNN.

“Merely being able to move forward with the talks, having those, those conversations will be a clear win for the next couple of days," she said, adding that the 60-day deadline for a final deal comprising Iran’s nuclear programme may be too short.
