A comment made by a Karnataka Congress leader R V Deshpande during a press interaction has sparked outrage after being perceived as insensitive toward women.

Deshpande, the MLA for Haliyal in Uttara Kannada and a former minister, responded to a journalist’s question about the absence of a hospital in Joida taluk, a concern especially pressing for pregnant women, with a remark that many considered offensive and dismissive.

When asked when Joida would receive a medical facility, the MLA reportedly replied, “Let it be your delivery.” A comment that has since drawn widespread condemnation for its tone and implications.

The remark triggered immediate backlash from media and political observers, calling it an affront to the dignity of women. Many have demanded that Deshpande issue a public apology to the journalist without delay.

“As a senior legislator, Mr. Deshpande’s comment is not just inappropriate but also deeply insulting,” a media rights group said in a statement. “Such remarks demean the profession of journalism and trivialise women's concerns. We expect our elected representatives to uphold dignity and lead by example.”

Deshpande has yet to respond to the criticism. Meanwhile, both the BJP and Janata Dal (Secular) have demanded a formal apology from him.

Women’s rights groups have also called for accountability, urging mandatory sensitivity training for public officials. “Would such a response have been given to a male journalist? This reflects the everyday sexism women face, even in professional spaces,” one activist said.

The journalist has not issued a public statement so far. However, media unions have expressed solidarity and are considering collective action if an apology is not issued.
