Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel on Sunday took a subtle dig at US President Donald Trump and CBS while presenting the Academy Award for the best documentary at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. While announcing the winner, Kimmel used the moment to deliver a pointed joke aimed at CBS and the US President.

Referring to the brief suspension of his show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, last year, Kimmel quipped about restrictions on free speech. “There are some countries whose leaders don’t support free speech," he told the audience. “I’m not at liberty to say which. Let’s just leave it at North Korea and CBS," he joked, drawing loud applause from the crowd.

During his appearance at the Oscars, Kimmel also poked fun at First Lady Melania Trump, who was the subject of a much-hyped documentary on her life. He joked that Trump would likely be upset that the film about his wife had not been nominated for the award. “Oh man, is he going to be mad that his wife wasn’t nominated for this," Kimmel said.

The remarks came months after controversy surrounding Kimmel’s comments about Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot in September by a 22-year-old suspect. During a monologue on his show, Kimmel criticised political reactions to the incident, accusing supporters of Trump of trying to frame the narrative around the killing.

The remarks drew backlash from conservative commentators, who alleged that Kimmel had implied the shooter was a Trump supporter. FCC Chair Brendan Carr called the comments misleading, and the show was temporarily taken off air by ABC. The programme returned six days later following criticism of the decision directed at ABC’s parent company, The Walt Disney Company.
