A suspect has been taken into custody following an apparent shooting incident on Saturday night during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner attended by US President Donald Trump, according to reports from the White House press pool citing the Secret Service.

Trump praised the response of security service and law enforcement agencies, saying that they acted “quietly and bravely". He further recommended to “LET THE SHOW GO ON“, emphasising that the final decision would be taken by law enforcement authorities.

Trump also noted that regardless of whether the event proceeds, the evening would be “much different than planned" and indicated it may have to be held again.

“Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we “LET THE SHOW GO ON" but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement. They will make a decision shortly. Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we’ll just, plain, have to do it again," the US President wrote on Truth Social.

Trump was rushed out of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner after loud bangs were heard and a United States Secret Service officer shouted “shots fired." Armed agents moved swiftly through the ballroom, escorting Trump and Melania Trump to safety.

Panic gripped the venue as guests ducked under tables, while authorities later confirmed that the president, along with all attendees, including JD Vance and other senior officials, remained unharmed.

The incident erupted after the welcoming speech and during dinner, before Trump was due to speak.

Trump survived an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in 2024, when a gunman opened fire, killing one attendee and grazing the president’s ear.
