Marseille ended a tumultuous week with resounding 5-2 win over Ligue 1 newcomers Paris FC on Saturday as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted twice in a 5-2 at the Stade Velodrome as head coach Roberto De Zerbi hinted at the possibility of reintegrating the banished Frenchman Adrien Rabiot.

Aubameyang struck twice while Mason Greenwood, Pierre-Emile Hojberg and Robinio Vaz all netted one each in Marseille’s statement win.

Aubameyang won a penalty converted by Mason Greenwood before doubling Marseille’s lead midway through the first half at the Velodrome.

Newly-promoted Paris FC fought back to level the score with goals from Ilan Kebbal and Moses Simon, but Aubameyang restored Marseille’s lead. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and youngster Robinio Vaz added further goals late in the match.

Marseille faced a crisis last weekend when a fight broke out between star player Adrien Rabiot and English winger Jonathan Rowe in the dressing room following a 1-0 defeat at Rennes. Rabiot was put up for sale, while Marseille aimed to accelerate Rowe’s departure after the incident, which club president Pablo Longoria described as “extremely violent."

“He made a mistake, but I hope we can mend things. I am not going to close the door on anyone," De Zerbi said regarding Rabiot’s potential stay. “It is not up to me, but I am willing to offer my hand to anyone and ready to do whatever it takes to resolve things."

For now, Rabiot remains on the market with just over a week left in the transfer window, and last season’s Ligue 1 runners-up played without him against the team from the capital.

The 36-year-old Aubameyang, returning to Marseille for a second stint after spending last season in Saudi Arabia, hit the post early on and won a penalty after being brought down by Paris FC’s Brazilian centre-back Otavio. Greenwood, who scored 21 goals in Ligue 1 last season, converted from the spot. Greenwood’s corner was then turned in by Aubameyang, but Marseille’s defense looked fragile, allowing the visitors to quickly equalize.

Kebbal, born in Marseille, scored to make it 2-1 before the half-hour mark and provided a brilliant pass for Nigeria winger Simon’s equalizer on 58 minutes.

With Rabiot absent, De Zerbi turned to his youngsters, and Bilal Nadir assisted Aubameyang’s goal to restore Marseille’s lead on 73 minutes. Nadir then set up Hojbjerg’s thumping long-range strike to make it 4-2. Greenwood missed a second penalty after Vaz was fouled, but Vaz completed the scoring in stoppage time, handing Paris FC their second loss since promotion.

“I don’t think we played well, but it has been a very difficult week, and the squad is made up of human beings, not robots," De Zerbi added.

Elsewhere, Lyon continued their strong start to the campaign after a turbulent summer plagued by financial issues. Paulo Fonseca’s team followed a 1-0 victory at Lens with a 3-0 home win over Metz, featuring goals from Malick Fofana, Corentin Tolisso, and new Czech signing Adam Karabec.

Saturday’s other game saw Nice secure their first points by winning 3-1 at home against Auxerre. Jeremie Boga’s opener for Nice was canceled out by Lassine Sinayoko, but a Clement Akpa own goal restored Nice’s advantage. Auxerre goalkeeper Donovan Leon was sent off just before halftime, and substitute Terem Moffi ensured Nice’s win on 76 minutes.

European champions Paris Saint-Germain made it two wins from two to start the season by beating Angers 1-0 on Friday, thanks to a goal from Fabian Ruiz.
