Lens closed within a point of Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday by defeating bottom side Metz 3-0 to revitalize their unexpected title bid.
Saudi international Saud Abdulhamid scored the first goal late in the first half, and Florian Thauvin doubled Lens’ lead immediately after the break. Amadou Haidara sealed the victory in the 52nd minute, marking Lens’ first win in three matches and reigniting their chase of PSG, who lost 3-1 at home to Monaco on Friday.
“There are still a few hills to climb, but being within a point of PSG with nine games to go is a good thing in itself," Lens coach Pierre Sage said.
Metz, who had previously beaten Lens earlier in the season, remained at the bottom of the table. They have not won in the league since November, earning only two points from their last 13 matches.
Recently fired coach Franck Haise had a triumphant return to the south coast side Nice on Sunday.
Under new coach Claude Puel, Nice continued their decline towards the relegation zone, suffering a 4-0 home defeat to Haise’s resurgent Rennes, who climbed above Lille to fourth place.
Lille drew 1-1 with Lorient, while Brest scored two unanswered goals against Le Havre.
On Saturday, Marseille avenged their midweek French Cup elimination by Toulouse, with Mason Greenwood scoring the only goal in a 1-0 league win. Lyon can reclaim third place from Marseille later on Sunday with a win over Paris FC.
