Microsoft has announced a major leadership shake-up at LinkedIn, naming longtime executive Dan Shapero as the new CEO of the world’s largest professional social network. Shapero, who has served as LinkedIn’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the past five years, succeeds Ryan Roslansky, who has led the platform since 2020 and last year took on additional responsibility in Microsoft’s Office productivity group.

The change is effective immediately.Shapero joined LinkedIn in 2008 and has been a key architect of the company’s growth. In a post on the platform, he emphasized that his focus will be on helping professionals navigate a job market increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.Meanwhile, Ryan Roslansky is not leaving Microsoft; instead, he will retain his role as Executive Vice President, reporting directly to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.Since taking the helm in 2020, Roslansky oversaw a massive expansion of the platform. Under his leadership, LinkedIn’s membership nearly doubled, growing from 700 million to 1.3 billion members. While the business continues to grow—reporting an 11% revenue increase in the most recent quarter—Microsoft is looking to Shapero to accelerate that momentum and better compete with social media giants like Meta.As part of the reshuffle, Mohak Shroff, LinkedIn’s engineering lead, is moving to Microsoft to become President of Platform and Digital Work. Erran Berger and Raghu Hiremagalur will now co-lead LinkedIn’s engineering department.

What Ryan Roslansky said in announcement on LinkedIn:

Last year when Satya Nadella asked me to lead LinkedIn and Microsoft Office, I knew what he was betting on: AI is going to transform how people work and grow in their careers faster than most people expect. And LinkedIn and Office would be at the center of that. That opportunity is only getting bigger. So we're scaling the team and talent to match it.First, I've asked Daniel Shapero to become the CEO of LinkedIn, reporting to me. Dan has led sales, marketing, and product across the most important parts of this business. He knows our members, our customers, and carries the mission in a way that's genuinely rare.Second, I've asked Mohak Shroff to take on the role of President of Platforms & Digital Work, also reporting to me. Mohak is one of the most original technology thinkers I know. In this role he'll focus on technology strategy and long-term innovation as we build the future of work.Congrats Dan and Mohak. I can’t wait to build this next chapter of LinkedIn and Microsoft together.

What Dan Shapero said on LinkedIn:

Today, I’m taking on the role as CEO of LinkedIn. I joined LinkedIn in May 2008 as employee #300ish, and it’s easy to say that my time at the company has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. It’s shaped me as a person for the better because of our people, our culture, our mission and vision, and the way we come together to take on meaningful challenges and create real impact. All of it. LinkedIn is about economic opportunity, and growing up I remember hearing stories of finding economic opportunity from my own family history, with my grandparents opening up local businesses in Maine and Pennsylvania to create a better life for their young families. The power of economic opportunity and the promise of LinkedIn has never been more important than it is today as the world is transformed by AI and professionals everywhere must transition along with it.I’d like to take a moment to thank Mike Gamson for hiring me and teaching me about building exceptional culture, Ryan Roslansky for his leadership and partnership over the many years of working together (and in advance for the years ahead), and all my fellow LinkedIn employees for the opportunity to learn with and from them. As I step into this role, similar to how I have approached new responsibilities in the past, I’ll start by learning and listening… connecting with our team, members, creators, and customers, each of whom make LinkedIn the platform that helps create economic opportunity.
