Lionel Messi hits hat trick in Argentina's 3-0 World Cup win over Algeria, equals Miroslav Klose record, but escapes card after controversial challenge on Aissa Mandi

Lionel Messi’s dazzling performance against Algeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday was overshadowed by controversy after a first-half incident sparked heated debate among football fans on social media.

The Argentina captain inspired a 3-0 victory in Kansas City, scoring all three goals as the defending champions began their World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion. However, post-match discussion was not limited to his record-equalling hat-trick.

During the game, Messi appeared to make contact with Algeria defender Aissa Mandi while challenging for possession. Replays showed the Argentine stepping on the defender’s calf and Achilles area from behind, leaving Mandi on the ground in visible discomfort.

Polish referee Szymon Marciniak allowed play to continue without issuing a card, and the video review officials also chose not to intervene.

The incident quickly became a major talking point online, with many supporters questioning why no disciplinary action was taken. Football fans argued that any other player might have received harsher punishment for a similar challenge.

Messi Nets Hat-Trick

The controversy did little to distract Messi from delivering another memorable World Cup display. The 38-year-old scored three times, registering the first World Cup hat-trick of his career and drawing level with Miroslav Klose as the tournament’s all-time leading scorer on 16 goals.

After the match, Messi reflected on the achievement and the significance of sharing the moment with those closest to him.

“To enjoy this with my family, with my teammates, the ones who are always there, is a really beautiful moment," Inter Miami star Messi said afterwards. “I’m happy."

The Argentina captain also praised the spirit within the squad following a winning start to their title defence.

“The squad, it’s a very united, very strong group," Messi said.

“I feel good; we were lucky enough to win a tough match. It’s important to start off with a win in the first game.

“I’m grateful to the fans, because once again they’ve shown that Argentina is crazy about this — we packed the stadium again."
