Messi's tame effort in the ninth minute of the first half of the FIFA World Cup 2026 match between Argentina and Austria went to the goalkeeper's right and was saved comfortably.

Lionel Messi had a chance to score his record-breaking 17th FIFA World Cup goal on Monday (June 22) but failed to convert from the spot after Argentina were awarded a penalty in the ninth minute of their Group J match against Austria at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

An Austrian defender fouled Lautaro Martinez inside the box in the sixth minute, and after a lengthy VAR review, Argentina were awarded a penalty. However, Messi failed to find the back of the net.

His tame effort went to the goalkeeper’s right and was saved comfortably.

The clip of Messi missing a golden opportunity to score his fourth goal of this year’s FIFA World Cup has since gone viral on the internet.

Had Messi converted the penalty, he would have moved to the top of the all-time FIFA World Cup goalscoring chart. As things stand, he remains tied with Germany’s Miroslav Klose on 16 goals. Klose featured in four FIFA World Cups for Germany and scored 16 times.

The ongoing tournament in North America is Messi’s sixth FIFA World Cup appearance for Argentina.

He is the most-capped player in FIFA World Cup history and is also the joint-highest assist provider in the tournament’s history.
