Lionel Messi had no role in the cancellation of the much-anticipated Finalissima clash between Argentina and Spain, according to reports.

Speculation had circulated that the Argentine captain may have influenced the decision to call off the match, but sources cited by ESPN said the opposite was true.

Messi reportedly viewed the game as a valuable opportunity: both to compete for another international title and to sharpen preparations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match between Argentina and Spain had been scheduled for March 27 in Doha.

Regional Tensions Force Cancellation

Organisers ultimately cancelled the fixture due to the escalating security situation in the Middle East following recent military strikes in the region.

In a statement, UEFA said that despite exploring alternative venues and dates alongside CONMEBOL, no acceptable solution could be found.

“After much discussion between UEFA and the organizing ‌authorities in Qatar, it is announced today that due to the current political situation in the region, the Finalissima cannot be played as hoped in Qatar," UEFA announced in a statement Sunday.

“UEFA explored other feasible alternatives, but each ultimately proved unacceptable to the Argentinian Football Association."

Argentina had reportedly suggested staging the match after the World Cup, but Spain’s schedule meant that option was not feasible.

The game would have been the latest edition of the CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions, which pits the champions of Europe against the winners of South America’s Copa América.

Spain earned their place after winning UEFA Euro 2024, while Argentina qualified as champions of the 2024 Copa America.

It also promised a generational clash between Messi and Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

With the Finalissima scrapped, Messi and Argentina will now turn their full attention to the upcoming World Cup, where the defending champions begin their campaign in June.
