Miami, who won the Leagues Cup in 2023, face an uphill battle to retain their title without the services of Messi heading into the quarterfinal stage of the event.

Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi has been ruled out of action ahead of the MLS side’s Leagues Cup quarter-final clash against Tigres UANL on Wednesday.

Messi has battled a minor muscle injury since a Leagues Cup group match against Necaxa and had returned to Miami’s lineup for their game against LA Galaxy, which the Herons won 3-1, but head coach Javier Mascherano revealed the Argentine superstar was still struggling with injury.

The 38-year-old magician from Rosario looked to be in physical discomfort during the game against the LA-based side, and dide not feature in the lineup announced ahead of the Leagues Cup fixture.

Miami, who won the Leagues Cup in 2023, face an uphill battle to retain their title without the services of Messi heading into the quarterfinal stage of the event comprising MLS and Mexica clubs.

Mascherano termed their upcoming opponents as a team with a lot of offensive power.

While Miami are slated to play tigres, Mexico’s Toluca face Orlando City before Los Angeles Galaxy host Pachuca, and the Seattle Sounders take on Puebla at home.
