Lionel Messi eased any lingering concerns over his fitness ahead of the FIFA World Cup by marking his return from injury with a goal in Argentina’s convincing 3-0 victory over Iceland in their final warm-up match on Tuesday.

The reigning world champions took to the field in Auburn, Alabama, with Messi among several star names left on the bench as coach Lionel Scaloni experimented with his line-up. The Inter Miami forward had not featured since suffering muscle fatigue and a minor hamstring strain during a club match on May 24, prompting questions about his readiness for the tournament.

Argentina received an early warning when Mikael Egill Ellertsson squandered a clear opportunity for Iceland in the opening minutes. The South Americans quickly made them pay, taking the lead through defender Valentín Barco after a scramble inside the Iceland penalty area.

Despite dominating possession, Argentina were unable to extend their advantage before half-time. Nico Paz missed a promising chance, while Iceland goalkeeper Elias Olafsson produced a crucial save to keep his side in the contest.

Scaloni introduced several key players after the break, including Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister and Lautaro Martinez. Lautaro came close to scoring twice but hit the woodwork on both occasions.

The crowd’s biggest cheer arrived in the 70th minute when Lionel Messi entered the match. The 39-year-old immediately influenced proceedings, creating danger with his passing and helping to stretch Iceland’s defence.

Moments later, Lautaro Martínez was brought down inside the penalty area after being played through, giving Argentina a chance to double their lead. Messi stepped up and calmly converted, registering his 117th goal for Argentina and his first since returning from injury.

The captain also played a role in Argentina’s third goal, with Rodrigo De Paul and Thiago Almada combining to complete the scoring.

The performance was an encouraging sign for Argentina as they prepare to defend the World Cup title they won in 2022. Scaloni’s side begin their Group J campaign against Algeria on June 16 before facing Austria and Jordan in the opening phase of the tournament.
