New Delhi,UPDATED: Jun 19, 2026 10:01 IST

The Delhi High Court is going to pronounce its verdict on the legal battle over the Centre’s temporary restriction on Telegram, with the court closely examining whether concerns over exam integrity justify limiting access to a platform used by nearly 150 million Indians. During Thursday’s hearing, Justice Tejas Karia questioned whether the rights of millions could be curtailed because of the actions of a limited number of users allegedly involved in NEET-UG 2026 paper leak activities. The Centre defended its decision under Section 69A of the IT Act, arguing that Telegram’s cloud-based architecture, large-scale bot networks and anonymous channels make enforcement difficult and enable rapid dissemination of leaked content, cybercrime and other illegal activities. However, the government also acknowledged in its affidavit that a complete platform-wide block could be disproportionate and noted Telegram’s compliance in removing flagged channels and URLs related to the examination controversy.
