The Centre recently asked the Delhi Gymkhana Club to completely vacate its 27.3-acre premises on Safdarjung Road by June 5. The Gymkhana club has 61 affiliated clubs across 15 countries.
Here’s all you need to know.
THE DELHI GYMKHANA CLUB: ITS HISTORY
Founded in 1913 as the Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club, it stands as one of India’s oldest and most iconic social and sporting landmarks. The sudden two-week eviction window has triggered massive anxiety for nearly 600 club employees whose jobs and families face immediate displacement.
The move is viewed by many political analysts as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader, long-running challenge against traditional, colonial-era Lutyens’ elites and their entrenched networks of influence. For generations, the club functioned as the ultimate status symbol and a quiet power centre for India’s ruling class, which functions with extreme exclusivity.
The club has long faced criticism, even from the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) in 2020, for maintaining a colonial, elitist attitude that felt out of step with democratic India.

WHAT NEXT?
The club’s General Committee held an emergency meeting and announced they are writing to the L&DO to seek formal clarity regarding the interests of their members and staff. While seeking an urgent appointment with Housing Ministry officials, club functionaries have indicated that they will legally challenge the eviction notice in court to halt the June 5 takeover.
If the courts refuse to grant a stay, the prime property will officially vest with the President of India, bringing a definitive end to the club’s operations at this historic venue.
