As LPG supply disruptions linked to the ongoing US-Israel-Iran war ripple across India, households appear to be exploring electric cooking alternatives. Online search trends and industry sales data suggest a sharp surge in interest in induction cookers and cooktops over the past few days.

According to Google Trends, searches for ‘induction cooker’ in India have risen significantly in the past week, with Kerala recording the highest search interest, followed by West Bengal, Odisha, Goa and Karnataka.

The spike coincides with reports of supply pressure on commercial LPG cylinders in several cities and heightened public attention on cooking gas availability.

The growing interest is also translating into a surge in sales. Tata Group’s electronics retail chain Croma said it has witnessed a sharp increase in demand for induction cooktops over the past few days.

“At Croma, we have observed a sharp and immediate uptick in demand for induction cooktops. Our average daily run rate has surged to nearly three times the usual levels," said CEO and Managing Director Shibashish Roy.

E-commerce platforms are reporting even sharper spikes. A spokesperson for Amazon said sales of induction cooktops have increased 30 times over the past two days, while rice cookers and electric pressure cookers have seen a fourfold jump. Air fryers and multi-use kettles are also recording double the usual demand.

Some of the most searched-for induction cooktops — including popular models from brands such as Pigeon, Prestige and Philips — are currently showing out-of-stock or limited availability on several online shopping platforms, including Amazon, reflecting the sudden spike in consumer interest.

Manufacturers say the demand surge is visible on their end as well. Stovekraft, which owns the Pigeon brand, reported that its average weekly online sales of induction cooktops have jumped four times since tensions escalated in West Asia.

“We have seen a four-times spike in the average weekly sales of induction cooktops on e-commerce channels since the beginning of the ongoing tensions in the Middle East," said Managing Director Rajendra Gandhi.

The company currently manufactures about two lakh units of induction cooktops at its facility in Harohalli, Karnataka, and plans to ramp up production in the coming financial year.

Industry players say induction cooktops and electric kettles are increasingly being viewed by households as reliable backup options amid uncertainty around energy supplies.

Meanwhile, the government has sought to reassure consumers that there is no need for panic over LPG availability. Sujata Sharma said India’s crude oil supplies remain secure and are being sourced through routes that do not rely on the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the normal LPG delivery cycle of about 2.5 days is continuing, while government measures have led to a 25% rise in LPG production.

However, as the conflict in West Asia continues to affect global energy markets, Indian households appear to be hedging their bets — with electric cooking appliances emerging as a popular fallback option.
