From increasing its passenger capacity by six million a year to upgrading the runway to accommodate wide-body aircraft, a massive expansion has been planned for Lucknow’s international airport in the coming years.
The expansion plan for the Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport includes air side, terminal, as well as city side projects. The airport operator said this will not only improve passenger experience, but streamline aircraft operations and enhance connectivity to other cities.
A senior official told News18 that the airport plans to expand its terminal capacity from eight million passengers to 14 million per year.
“The expansion work is underway and the total cost of this expansion will be Rs 900 crore. This will not only enhance passenger experience but also allow us to serve more footfall every year than we are catering to at present," the official said.
Major expansions have been planned on the air side, including an increase in air traffic movement per hour from 17 to 24 by next year.
“This will be possible because we are coming up with a parallel taxi track that will be operational by next year. This will give us a much-required boost as not only will our per hour air traffic movement increase but will also be streamlined," the official said.
Apart from this, one of the most important developments on the air side will be the runway upgrade. While the current length of the runway at Lucknow airport is 2,744 m, it will be expanded to 3,514 m. For this, 58.05 acres of land acquisition is underway, the official said.
“This would mean that the Lucknow airport will be able to operate ultra-long haul wide-body aircraft like the Airbus A380, Boeing 747-8, Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A350 directly from Lucknow. This means Lucknow will witness direct flights to destinations in the US and Europe, and no more multi-destination travel will be required for such long-haul flights," the officer said, adding that the total cost of runway expansion will be Rs 180 crore.
Lucknow airport has recently completed the recarpeting of its runway and has upgraded the lighting system on the runway, which the officials said, will aid in efficient operations resulting in fewer delays during low-visibility weather conditions and the coming winter season.
In another major addition, the airport is also planning to raise its own cargo facility. “A cargo terminal is planned along with the expansion of the airport. This facility will be able to handle 50,000 metric tons of cargo per year. We are expecting it will be operational within the next five years," the official said.
