8-year-old boy electrocuted after entering poorly fenced transformer zone

LUCKNOW: On the morning of Sunday, a heartbreaking incident unfolded in the Phoolbagh Shankarpuri Colony of Hussainganj, Lucknow. Fahad, an eight-year-old boy, was playing with friends when their ball accidentally rolled into the poorly barricaded area surrounding a 440 kVA transformer.

In a bid to retrieve it, Fahad stepped inside. Moments later, he came into contact with the fuse unit and suffered a severe electric shock. His uncle, Mohammad Raes, expressed deep anguish, alleging that the barricade around the transformer was broken and had been left unrepaired despite repeated complaints. “Had the discom acted responsibly and fixed the broken fencing, my nephew would still be alive,” he said, holding back tears.Fahad was rushed to Civil Hospital, but despite efforts by medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. In response, the Hussainganj Executive Engineer Office and Sub-Divisional Office issued a joint statement acknowledging the incident. The Hussainganj division’s statement claimed the transformer was “secured,” but the broken barricade told a different story. They stated that the transformer was barricaded, but the child managed to access the area through the gate.

The statement described the event as a tragic accident and extended condolences to the grieving family. The incident has sparked outrage in the local community, raising questions about infrastructure safety and accountability. “Fahad’s death serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of negligence and the urgent need for stricter safety measures around high-voltage installations,” said local resident Noor Banu, a local resident of Shankarpuri colony who was anguished over the eight-year-old kid’s death.
