Ludhiana: Caught going on a motorcycle, a factory worker and his female friend reportedly jumped into the Neelon canal to escape the onslaught from her family, only to be pulled out so the flogging could continue. The Koom Kalan police said the woman’s family had also kidnapped the man in an auto-rickshaw and robbed him. The first-information report about the attack on Harmandeep Singh, 22, names three suspects — Deepi, Sukhi, and Ravi of Katani Kalan village — and an unidentified accomplice. The family mob first pursued Harmandeep Singh of Chhandra village and Parminder Kaur and intercepted them near the canal, where they pounced on the man and chased him into the water after the woman.Police say that after the attackers had dragged the pair from the water and escalated the beating, they then forced the man into an autorickshaw and drove him to the nearby Katani Kalan City Centre for a round of iron-rod attack. Later, they allegedly summoned and humiliated his mother before snatching his mobile phone. The investigating officer, head constable Jagdish Kumar, said the man and the woman had been friends for several months. Police have charged the suspects under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) with causing hurt, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation, and common intent in crime.
